THE WORKFLOW

How to use this tile calculator

  1. Choose project dimensions or known area and confirm the units.
  2. Enter tile length and width, plus your optional waste allowance.
  3. Calculate tile counts; enter box coverage or price per tile only if needed.

Formula & assumptions

Exact tiles = project area / tile face area. Order tiles = round up(exact tiles × (1 + waste / 100)). Boxes = round up(order area / entered box coverage).

Area-based estimates are not a cut/layout plan. No grout spacing or overlap is deducted. Box coverage is supplied by the user; tile and box counts are separate purchase options.

AN ARITHMETIC EXAMPLE, NOT A RECOMMENDATION

Worked example

Example only: 100 ft² of surface and 12 × 12 in tiles, without an extra allowance.

  • Project area100 ft²
  • Project area9.29 m²
  • Order area with extra100 ft²
  • Order area with extra9.29 m²
Example calculation

9.290304 m² ÷ (0.3048 m × 0.3048 m) = 100 tiles. Apply 0% extra = 100; round up to 100. Boxes, if entered, use order area ÷ box coverage, rounded up.

Common questions

Does this plan cuts or layout?

No. This is an area-based quantity estimate. Tile face dimensions are used without deducting grout gaps; cuts, patterns and reuse are not modeled.

How are boxes calculated?

Enter the manufacturer’s area coverage per box. Order area including your extra allowance is divided by box coverage and rounded up.
